There are 195 countries in the world, 193 of which are members of the United Nations. How Many Countries Are There in the World? Political map of the world. There are 195 countries in the world. The United Nations (UN) recognizes 195 sovereign countries. 193 of these countries are members of the United Nations, and two - the Holy See and the State of Palestine - are simply observer states. By some definitions, there are 197 countries in the world. This number is drawn when Taiwan and Kosovo are included. Is Taiwan a Country? Taiwan is officially named "the Republic of China" (China is "the People's Republic of China"). 21 members of the United Nations, as well as the Holy See, recognize Taiwan as the seat of the Republic of China. Taiwan has many qualities commonly attributed to statehood. For example, Taiwan has its own armed forces, a president who is elected, and its own constitution. However, the People's Republic of China believes the government of Taiwan is illegitimate. Is Kosovo a Country? 110 United Nations members recognize Kosovo. It is also a member of several official organizations, including the International Money Bank and the World Bank. However, its statehood has been disputed ever since it declared itself independent from Serbia in February of 2008. The United States has kept official relations with Kosovo since 2008 and recognizes Kosovo's sovereignty. What is a Country? A country is a political entity that maintains total sovereignty over its territory and people. The word "state" is generally used to mean the same thing as "country". The word nation, however, differs from a state and a country because it refers to a group of people who share similar beliefs and culture. It is not necessarily confined by geography.
